Player SNAPSHOT

My name is Gregg Downing. I’m from Long Island, New York, and I’ve been
competing in slowpitch for over 15 years.

I primarily play Right field and Centerfield , but I’ve always been the guy willing to move wherever the team needs me.

Slowpitch JOURNEY

I didn’t grow up thinking slowpitch would be my thing. Like most guys, I came
from baseball, Drafted as a pitcher by Dodgers in 2011 -2014 and Whitesox 2014-
2015. But once I stepped into the slowpitch world, I realized quickly it wasn’t
“just rec ball.” The competition, the speed of the game, the chess match between
hitters and pitchers — it pulled me in immediately.

My first tournament team showed me what real competitive slowpitch looked
like. The travel, the rivalries, the grind of back-to-back games in the heat — that’s
when it clicked for me.
I realized I loved the game when I started studying it. Not just playing it. Breaking
down swings. Understanding approach. Figuring out how to win at a high level.

Why I Love THE GAME

Slowpitch is bigger than the scoreboard.

It’s friendships that turn into family.
It’s road trips and hotel laughs.
It’s respect between competitors who battle all day and shake hands after.

The game has given me a network of people I wouldn’t have met otherwise. It’s taught me how to handle pressure, how to lead, and how to stay locked in when it matters most.

What keeps me motivated year after year is growth. I’m always trying to evolve — better approach, better preparation, better leadership. The game doesn’t reward comfort. And I love that.

Why Slugger

I swung my first Louisville Slugger early in my competitive slowpitch career, and it felt different immediately. The balance. The feedback through the handle. The confidence stepping into the box.

I choose Slugger because I trust it in big moments.

My gamer right now is a Louisville Slugger Genesis — and when I’m in the box, I don’t think about the bat. I just compete. That’s the ultimate compliment to equipment.

What sets Slugger apart for me is consistency. The brand represents performance and legacy. When you swing a Slugger, you feel like you’re part of something bigger than just one season.

OFF THE Field

Off the field, I’m heavily involved in player development and training. I work with athletes year-round, helping them sharpen their skills and mindset. Fitness and preparation are part of my daily routine — strength training, mobility work, and constant reps.

Balancing life and ball isn’t always easy, but for me, they blend together. The discipline I bring to my professional life carries onto the field. And the competitive fire from the field carries into everything else I do.

WORDS OF WISDOM

If you’re new to slowpitch: respect the game. It’s deeper than it looks.

If you’re chasing higher competition: train with intention. Don’t just show up and swing. Study pitchers. Understand situations. Elevate your IQ.

And most importantly — be a good teammate. Talent gets noticed. Character gets remembered.

I wish I understood earlier how important preparation is. The higher the level, the smaller the margin. The guys who last are the ones who treat it like more than a hobby.

Career HIGHLIGHTS

I’ve been fortunate to compete at multiple levels and win at every stage. I’m an ASA B & A World Champion — which means I’ve battled through two of the toughest divisions in the game and finished on top. I’m also a 2X USSSA AA World Champion, a USSSA C World Champion, and a USSSA Co-Ed World Champion. Winning at different classifications and formats taught me something important: the game changes, but preparation and leadership don’t. My proudest moments aren’t just the rings — they’re the runs. The long weekends. The pressure innings. The games where everything is on the line and someone has to deliver. I’ve been part of teams that refused to fold. I’ve had seasons where we were underestimated and finished on top. Those are the years that stick with you. Championships validate the work. But what I’m most proud of is competing at a high level consistently — and earning respect across divisions. A game I’ll never forget? Bottom of the last inning, two outs, down by one leading off with a walk next guy hit walk off Hr to win the AA as an A team.
